Christensen: Turner Broadcasting Lifts Baseball Blackout

October 8, 2009

Contact: Monique.Clendinen@mail.house.gov

Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen received word last evening that Turner Broadcasting agreed to lift the blackout of division baseball playoff games to the Virgin Islands. The contract between Turner Broadcasting and Major League Baseball did not include broadcasting rights to the Caribbean. Congresswoman Christensen wrote a letter to Turner Broadcasting CEO Phillip Kent and Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig asking that the games be shown in the Virgin Islands, because the territory is indeed part of the United States.

“After weeks of working to find ways to get the broadcast and running into barriers because of contract issues, we finally just wrote to them asking that they amend the contract,” Congresswoman Christensen said. “My appeal was based on the fact that while we are located in the Caribbean, we are indeed part of the United States and should be afforded the right to view the games,” she said.”I am pleased that Turner Broadcasting responded quickly to my appeal, and that baseball fans throughout the territory will be able to view the games.”
