Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen went to the floor of the House of Representatives today to ensure that the U.S. Virgin Islands and the other territories are included in the Tourism and Travel Promotion Act of 2009. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and of the Travel and Tourism Caucus, Congresswoman Christensen was a co-sponsor of the House version of the legislation which clearly included the territories. However, the Senate version before the House today did not express clear inclusion of the territories in the bill that would create a non-profit corporation to promote tourism to U.S. destinations.

“I support its enactment under the condition and with the understanding that its implementation will benefit all of the territories and not simply the 50 states,” she said. “While the bill text could be more definitive, we nonetheless know that the corporation will take appropriate steps to promote travel to the territories accordingly,” she said.

Both Congressmen William Delahunt and Roy Blunt, key proponents of the legislation, agreed that it is the intent of the Congress to include the territories. Congresswoman Christensen thanked them and other colleagues for their support.
