Department of Justice Issues three Grants to the Virgin Islands

Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen is pleased to announce that the Virgin Islands has received three grants totaling $843,331 from the United States Department of Justice.

Two of the grants are for the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix. The first in the amount of $498,899 is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; it will be used for the Recovery Act Transitional Housing Grants for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalking, or Sexual Assault program. These funds must be used to support programs that provide transitional housing, provide short- term housing assistance and/or provide services designed to enable individuals who are fleeing domestic violence to locate and secure permanent housing. By providing individuals with services like transportation, counseling, child care services, and case management to name a few, Transitional Housing Assistance grantees offer its clients holistic, victim-centered services that support individuals for self sufficiency.

The second grant for the Women’s Coalition is in the amount of $204,035 for the Grants to State Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions program. This program is designed to support the states coalition efforts to coordinate victim services within that state and collaborate with other federal and local entities to respond to violence against women issues affecting their jurisdiction.

The final grant being disbursed from the U.S. Department of Justice is for $140,397 going to the Government of the Virgin Islands, for the Paul Coverdall National Forensic Sciences Improvement Act Formula Grant Program. This programs funds are to be used to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services and/ or to eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence, including controlled substances, firearms examination, forensic pathology, latent prints, questioned documents, toxicology, and trace evidence.
